Should You Use a Big-Name AI Agent or Build Your Own?

By David OralevichOctober 3, 2026

A client asked me this week: "OpenAI, Meta, and xAI all just launched agents. Do I use one of those, or get my own?"

It is the right question, and the honest answer is that it depends on the work.

The big names are worth a try

OpenAI's Dots, Meta's Muse, and SpaceXAI's Grok Bot are all new. They are impressive, and they are a smart place to start. They are good for exploring what AI can do, for research, for brainstorming, and for one-off tasks. They cost little, and you will learn quickly whether AI fits how you work.

They also share one limit. They are built for everyone. They do not know your clients, your pricing, your policies, or how you write. Every session starts with explaining your business again, and the information you type in goes into a tool you do not control.

What "your own agent" means

An agent of your own is built around you. It learns your business once and keeps learning. It follows your rules, writes in your voice, and remembers last Tuesday's conversation. It knows which tasks it can handle alone and which ones need your sign-off. And your information stays in your own setup instead of being spread across public tools.

Picture a small law office, a financial planner, or a consultant with a steady stream of client email. A public tool can help draft one reply. An agent built for that office can sort the inbox every morning, draft the routine replies in the owner's voice, track deadlines, and flag the three messages that need a human today. The owner approves what goes out. The agent does the legwork.

It gets better the longer it works for you

An agent is not a tool you set up once. Every task teaches it something about how you work, so its value compounds. In the first week it handles the routine: sorting the inbox, drafting replies, tracking dates. By the third month it starts to anticipate your next step. It drafts the follow-up you always send after a client call before you ask. It flags the deadline coming up Thursday. It notices the client who has gone quiet and suggests a check-in. A public tool starts from zero every time. An agent built around you keeps building on what it already knows.

How to decide

Ask two questions.

First, is this a one-off, or work you repeat every week? One-off tasks belong with a public tool. Repeated work belongs with an agent that learns it.

Second, does the work involve confidential information? If client data, contracts, or financial details are involved, you want to know exactly where that information lives and who can see it. That points to your own agent.

Most professionals end up using both. Public tools are great for exploring. A private agent does the daily work.

Build it yourself, or hire it out

You can build an agent yourself if you have the time and the patience to set it up, test it, and maintain it. Many people do not, and that is where a reputable firm comes in. A good one starts by asking how you work: what you want handled, what it should never touch without approval, and where its access should end. Your answers become the rules the agent runs on.

What to look for in a firm

If you hire it out, ask three things. Where will my information live, and who can see it? What can the agent do without my approval, and what can it never do? And who supports it after launch? Clear, specific answers to those questions matter more than any feature list.

That intake is what we do at Apollo Claw. We design and build custom AI agents around a business, then handle the setup, training, and ongoing support, so you can focus on your work.

Not sure where you fit? A short consultation will tell you honestly whether an agent makes sense for you yet, and what it would take.
