Three Ways to Shop Smarter This Holiday Season With AI

By David OralevichNovember 1, 2026

The holiday season asks more of a shopper than any other time of year. The choices multiply, the reviews contradict one another, and a discount tag is no guarantee that the price is a good one. Most of us respond by spending a weekend comparing tabs and still second-guessing the purchase.

AI will not do your shopping, and it cannot see every price in every store. It is, however, well suited to three tasks that consume the most time and carry the most risk of a poor decision. Each one below includes the exact words to use. Open ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, copy the prompt, replace the brackets with your own details, and press enter. If the first answer is close but not right, tell it what to adjust.

1. Compare two products with a clear recommendation

When two options look the same on paper, the useful question is which one fits how you will actually use it. Give the AI the use and the budget, and ask what to check in the reviews.

"I am deciding between [Product A] and [Product B] for [how I will use it]. My budget is [$]. Compare them on the factors that matter for that use, tell me what to look for in the reviews of each, and recommend one with your reasoning."

You will receive a side-by-side comparison, the factors worth weighing, and a list of warning signs to look for, such as complaints about durability after a few months.

2. Verify that a deal is real

A markdown means little without the normal price for reference. Ask the AI what a fair price looks like and how to confirm the claim.

"This [item] is listed at [$X], marked down from [$Y]. What is a typical price range for this kind of product? How can I verify that the discount is real, and when do prices usually fall?"

A note on limits: the AI may not know today's exact price at your store. Treat its answer as a guide to what to verify, such as the price history on a tracking site or the same item at two other retailers. If the sale price is close to the usual price, you can pass.

3. Build a gift list that holds to a budget

List the people, what each one enjoys, and your total limit. The AI handles the arithmetic and the sequencing.

"I have [$400] for holiday gifts. Here are the people and their interests: [Mom: gardening, Dad: golf, Ben: music]. Suggest one gift for each with an approximate price, keep the total under my budget, and tell me which to order first so everything arrives in time."

If the total runs over, say so, and ask it to trim. It will adjust the list and keep the budget intact.

A final check: reviews

Paste a batch of reviews into the AI and ask it to flag the ones that look unreliable.

"Here are the reviews for a product I am considering. Do any appear fake or paid for? Point out repeated phrasing, reviews with no specific detail, and anything else that looks unusual. [paste the reviews here]"

Treat the result as a signal, not proof. Repeated phrases, vague praise and clusters of reviews posted within a few days of each other deserve a second look. The most credible reviews describe a specific problem or a specific detail, such as "the lid cracked after the third wash."

One precaution applies to every prompt in this post: keep passwords, card numbers and Social Security numbers out of anything you type into an AI tool. Everything else on your shopping list is fair to share.

These prompts work, but you begin from scratch each time you use them. The AI does not know your budget, your family or what everyone likes. An agent built around you already does, and it handles this kind of work without being asked. That is what we build at Apollo Claw, for individuals and for businesses.
